The Soul: The Beginning

What is a soul? Is soul interchangeable with spirit? Is it important to understand what the difference is between soul and spirit?

A soul is a man that Father God created from the dust of the ground, and who was given the breath of life (man's own little spirit befitting his own body) by Father God's own Breath of Life Giver, Father God's own empowerment through His own Holy Spirit (Genesis2:7KJV).

Soul and spirit are not interchangeable with each other! "For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit..." (Hebrews4:12NJKV). Thus, the soul and spirit are separate entities, and yet together. As will be explained elsewhere. But here's a glimpse of that explanation. The soul is the sum of its tripartite (three) parts: mind, body, and spirit, as in this mathematical equation, "mind+body+spirit=soul."

You might question when, how, where did the interchanging between soul and spirit go haywire, out of control, erratic, of faulty thinking, on the blink, etcetera. According to ancient philosophers, Socrates, Plato, and Augustine, they thought the soul to be immortal. They also believed in dualism, which holds that reality or existence is divided into two parts. These two parts are often identified as the body and the soul. To dualists, the soul is a real substance that exists independent from the body. Nothing is further from the truth (Colossians2:8AMP). "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception [pseudo-intellectual babble], according to the tradition [and musings] of mere men, following the elementary principles of the world, rather than following [the truth--the teachings of] Christ)."
